Subject: EPRU All-star Tryouts

Everyone,

I hope that all of you are enjoying your time off for the holidays.  This email is being sent to inform everyone about the revised EPRU All-star Program.  The EPRU (along with the PRU & VRU) has agreed to put together an All-Star team that will compete against the PRU and VRU all-star teams in order to select the MARFU All-star team.  This method is being used in order to allow the best players to make the MARFU All-star team no matter what school they play for.  There has been a perception in the past about the only players from certain schools make the MARFU team.  This model is being used to eliminate those stereotypes.  No one will be allowed to play for the MARFU team who does not play for their local union all-star team.  They also must play in the MARFU all-star team tournament.  This is being done in an effort to select the best players available to represent the MARFU All-star team.

The EPRU is really taking this new model seriously.  In an effort to make easier to try-out and also select the best players, we are dividing the EPRU into two teams (East & West).  There will be two EPRU teams that will play each other and the final EPRU All-star team that will be selected to compete in the MARFU All-star team tournament.  All of the try-out dates and games still need to be confirmed.

The EPRU East team will be made up of players from the following schools:

  • Delaware
  • Rutgers
  • West Chester
  • Temple
  • St. Joe’s
  • Penn
  • Villanova
  • Drexel
  • Widener
  • LaSalle
  • TCNJ
  • Swarthmore
  • Haverford
  • Ursinus

Coaches for each EPRU team have been selected from all three divisions in order to allow the regular season play be part of the selection process.  The coaches for the EPRU East Team will be:

  • Head Coach:  Bjorn Haglid  (D1 -- Delaware )
  • Assistant Coach:   John Sciotto  (D2 -- Temple )
  • Assistant Coach:  Tom Conrad  (D3 – Delaware )

The first tryout for the East team will be held

Saturday January 23rd

9:30 sign-in

Duration: 10am to 4pm  (come prepared to scrimmage)

Location:  Simon Gratz High School (1798 W Hunting Park Ave., Philadelphia , PA)

Coaches and Club officers -- Please send out to your teams.  The more players that are involved will ensure that the the best players are selected.

Best wishes,

John Sciotto

October 3rd  WCU vs. Bloomsburg/PSU Berks

Here is an update on the venue for tomorrow's matches.

At this time the field at Matlack Street has not been lined by the university. We would normally attempt to do this ourselves in a pinch but the color scheme for rugby field markings is gold and is not readily available. Further, the university would not make a recommendation on whether we could play on the field due to rain until sometime mid-morning tomorrow. If we were advised that we could not use the field at that time relocating to another venue would be a major problem as there are three teams, two referees and many spectators who would be affected as well as the hosting club, Media Rugby Club.

Accordingly, tomorrow's matches will be played at the home field of the Media Rugby Club located in Bridgeport, PA. For directions please click on:  http://epru.org/news/directions.php?d=151
If you have a problem with this link directions can also be found on Media's website at www.mediarugby.org

The schedule of matches will be:

12:00 PM  WCU vs. Penn State Berks
  1:30 PM  WCU vs. Bloomsburg
  3:00 PM  WCU vs. Bloomsburg

We would like to thank Media Rugby Club for their support. Please note that there will food, soda and water available for sale during the matches and we hope that you would support our gracious hosts the Media Rugby Club.

All WCU players are asked to meet outside of the Lawrence Center at 9:45 AM SHARP! Because of this late change vans and buses are not available. We will need to carpool to the matches. If you drive please bring your car with you.
